PART 8: THE UNDERWATER PALACE
As Robin and Aria drifted through the underwater currents,
they noticed a magnificent palace a little further away. Its coral-and-crystal
walls seemed to shimmer with promises of effortless success.
"Look!" Ariana exclaimed. "This must be the easy business path
we've been looking for!"
They were guided through the front gates by friendly underwater creatures - seahorses,
schools of fish. The outside square was filled with what appeared to be
people swimming by, just like them.
A very rich gentleman, swimming by the door of the underwater mansion
greeted them riding a beautiful sea horse, clothed in rich colors.
"Welcome to my home, entrepreneurs!" he shouted happily,
waving them inside the lavish front doors.
"I made $10,000 in my first week!" a short lady with long flowing brown hair proclaims.
The water swirls around her, creating a mesmerizing dance. Her hair billows
and flows like living silk, each strand moving in ethereal waves that
seem to breathe with the underwater current.
"It was so simple," another gentleman said. He swam by wearing a
specially treated diving mask. "Just pull the lever, and success floods in!"
The interior hall was lavish, filled with testimonials and success
stories plastered on iridescent walls.
"$200 today only!" a lady in a booth said aloud. Her booth was
at the end of the hall.
"Let's do it!" Ariana said to Robin.
Robin wasn't so sure. He had done stuff like this before.
But they had to work together, so he compromised and they agreed.
They fumbled in their pockets and noticed that their wallets
had disappeared, and there was now the equivalent of
gold and silver there instead.
They paid four silver coins each (the equivalent to $200) to the smiling red-haired
lady at a booth—a "processing fee" for joining this miraculous business opportunity.
The lady motioned them on and they walked and came to a central study,
where a large golden lever stood prominently.
Beside it, a large sign read: "INSTANT SUCCESS - JUST PULL!"
Ariana looked at Robin. "Should we?"
"Well, why not!" Robin answered.
They pulled the lever together.
Immediately, a small panel slid open beneath the lever.
In tiny, almost invisible text, a disclaimer appeared:
"IMPORTANT NOTICE:
- Testimonials are not guaranteed results
- Success depends on individual effort
- Past performance does not indicate future results
- Most participants will not achieve significant earnings
- Success requires hard work, skill, and consistent effort."
"Well, that doesn't sound 'easy' to me?" Robin thought...
Ariana hadn't heard him, because before they could process the
disclaimer, a smooth-talking lady approached with stunning golden hair
and a face like an angel.
"Don't worry about that," she said with a wink. "Just step out
of the palace now and enjoy the currents.
The dolphins will notify you of your incredible success soon!"
"Oh, ok!" They both said happily. "Let's go!"
They both swam back outside the palace and soon found
the underwater eddies and enjoyed drifting along.
"This is fun!" Ariana shouted to Robin. "This is EXACTLY what
I was hoping for!"
"Me too!" Robin agreed, smiling.
They swam on, watching colorful fish and coral formations. Days passed.
Finally, the dolphins arrived - playful, jumping, but completely
silent about any business results.
"Hmm!" Robin wondered outloud as he took it all in. "That's strange."
"Yeah," agreed Ariana. "But maybe those are the wrong dolphins?"
"Guess it's possible..." Robin agreed. They continued to
drift along in wonder.
A few days later, a turtle approached and seemed to want to
say something, but then passed on.
Days passed into weeks and still nothing.
One day, Ariana looked at Robin, a mix of confusion and dawning
understanding in her eyes.
"I think we got taken." She said.
"Is this what an 'easy path' really looks like?"
"Something's really wrong!" Admitted Robin, beginning to get that
familiar sick feeling deep down in his stomach. He had been here before.
"I don't think I can do this anymore."
Robin: "Do what?"
"Chase fantasies. This 'Land of Time Freedom' feels
like another empty promise."
"You might be right," Robin agreed. "But I know there
are real people who have got to the 'Land of Time Freedom.'
I'm sure of it!"
"I'm not so sure!" Ariana disagreed.
But just as they were talking, they both began to notice something:
They weren't moving forward. The current were carrying them,
yes—but in circles. The same coral formation kept appearing.
The same sea turtle drifts past again, its knowing eyes seeming to mock their
lack of progress. Robin watches, a sinking feeling growing. He realizes they've
been here before - literally.
The coral formations repeat. The same schools of fish swim by.
The underwater landscape feels like a loop, trapping them in an endless,
unchanging moment.
Each time Robin thinks they've moved forward, he recognizes landmarks
from days ago. The currents carry them in a perfect,
maddening circle. Nothing really changes. Nothing moves forward.
We're not going anywhere, Robin realizes with growing despair.
And then Ariana and Robin noticed something else: their bodies were changing.
Their fingers had started to web. Their skin was taking on a greenish tint.
"Look!" Ariana cried: "Small gills are forming on your neck/
Are they on me, too?"
"Yes!" Robin confirmed. "The longer we stay here, the more we
become part of this place..."
They both thought about it, horror rising.
"We'll both turn into just another fish, drifting forever, going nowhere."
Ariana said frightened.
Suddenly, the voice of Sophia returned, but now it sounded
different—colder, more sinister:
"Yes, you're learning. The Simple Path is exactly that: simple.
Comfortable. Easy. And completely useless. Those who stay here never
reach the Land of Time Freedom. They simply float in their fantasies
until they forget they ever wanted anything else."
Ariana kicked hard, and then so did Robin. Ariana followed Robin upward toward
the distant light. The water fought them now, thick as honey. Their lungs—which
had breathed water so easily before—began to burn again.
"Must... get... out..." Robin cried.
They swam harder, desperate. The surface seemed impossibly far.
Their vision started to blur. But then—
They broke through!
