CHAPTER 13: HENRY & MARCUS

Robin walks through the forest for hours, constantly looking over his

shoulder for signs of the dragon or the Necrotic Lord's soldiers. The path

winds between ancient trees, their branches forming a canopy that blocks

most of the sky—good for hiding from aerial patrols,

but unnerving in its darkness.

He comes to a stream cutting across the path and kneels to drink.

The water is cold and clear, and for a moment, he feels almost safe.

Suddenly, a voice calls out from nearby. "Don't move."

The command is sharp, precise - a warrior's instruction. Something sharp

presses against his back, and Robin freezes.

A sword - is positioned carefully, ready to strike if Robin proves to be a threat.

"Recite the Resistance Phrase," the voice demands.

"The one given by Lyra to true travelers."

Robin hesitates, then remembers. Lyra had shared something

to him during their brief encounter.

"Umm...sure..." Robin says, thinking hard. "Let me see...

Something about...Time Freedom is discovered through persistent learning,

not magical shortcuts."

The words are close - slightly different, but capturing the same essential meaning.

A moment of tense silence follows. The mans sword remains pressed

against Robin's back, waiting.

Then the warrior steps forward, showing himself. He is young, but with

cuts and bruises and clothes scorched in places. His eyes are cautious, scanning

Robin for any sign of deception.

The slight variation in the phrase intrigues the young man. A true agent of the

Necrotic Lord would have rehearsed the exact words. But Robin's subtle

difference suggests something else - authenticity.

He relaxes his grip slightly, the sword's pressure against Robin's back easing.

Something in Robin's demeanor speaks of genuine desperation,

not calculated deception.

"What happened to you?" He asks, his voice now less threatening, more curious.

"The dragon," Robin says, his voice still shaky. "I barely escaped."

The warrior nods grimly, but his hand remains near his weapon.

"I saw the smoke. You're lucky. Most don't survive their first encounter."

He steps closer, still wary. "I'm Henry. And you'd better have a good

reason for being on this path."

Robin understands immediately. This isn't just a meeting.

This is a test of survival, of trust.

"I'm Robin," he replies, shaking the warrior's offered hand.

"What brings you to the Sky Islands?" Robin asks

Henry gestures around, his eyes constantly scanning the surrounding forest.

"Same as you, I'd guess. I found an archway in my world. Stepped through.

Ended up here." His hand never strays far from his sword. "Been wandering these

islands for days now, trying to avoid the Dark Lord's patrols.

Heard rumors of someone who can help—Elves who know the secret paths.

You heard anything about that?"

"Yes!" Robin feels hope surge. "A woman named Lyra—she saved me from the

dragon. She told me to find the Elves. Said they know ways between the islands

that the Necrotic Lord doesn't watch. There's someone called the Skilled Elf who

can teach us real skills."

Henry considers this, his warrior's instincts clearly assessing every detail.

"Then we should travel together," he says finally. "Two sets of eyes are better

than one. And if the dragon comes back..." He pats his sword. "I'd rather not face it alone."

Robin agrees immediately. The thought of traveling alone through

this dangerous place terrifies him.

As they walk together following the path west, Robin finds himself grateful

for Henry's calm presence. The warrior has clearly been through his own trials—his

cuts and bruises tells stories of battles fought and barely won.

As they walk, the forest suddenly feels different. Too quiet. Too still.

Henry's hand moves to his sword, his warrior instincts sensing something's wrong.

Robin feels a prickling at the back of his neck.

A nearly imperceptible sound - the softest rustle of leaves, a breath too

deliberate to be natural. Someone is watching them.

Suddenly, a whispered voice cuts through the silence: "Step back!"

Robin and Henry stop dead.

Just then, a barrage of arrows whistles past them, embedding into trees just

inches from where they would have been walking. Hidden patrol markers.

A figure emerges from the shadows. "You were about to walk directly into

a trap" he says quietly. "These islands are filled with them.

One wrong step means capture."

Henry and Robin exchange shocked glances.

"How long have you been following us?" Henry asks, his hand still on his sword.

Marcus's weathered face shows a slight smile. "Long enough to keep you alive.

The Necrotic Lord doesn't just set simple traps. These are designed to wound,

not kill. Capture is far more valuable to him.

Marcus kneels and points out subtle signs Robin and Henry missed.

"See these," he says pointing to Robin and then to the nearly invisible

thin wires at Robins feet.

"See how barely distinguishable they are from tree roots?

You triggered it by walking through. Necrotic Lord patrol traps.

Set off by weight and movement."

He traces a nearly invisible pattern on the ground. "Watch how these pine needles

are arranged - unnaturally straight. A perfect geometric line in nature

always means human intervention."

Robin leans closer. "I didn't even notice!"

Marcus's eyes narrow. "Six months of survival teaches you to read

the landscape like a language."

"A Guard patrol," the man muttered. "Passed through here maybe

an hour ago." Either very brave or very foolish to be walking these main paths."

"We're looking for the Elves," Robin said carefully. "The ones who

know the secret ways." The man stood, brushing dirt from his hands.

"Lyra sent you?"

"How did you know?"

"She's the only one who directs new travelers properly. Most people tell you to

use the main bridges—which gets you captured."

Marcus extends his hand, his weathered fingers telling stories of survival.

"I'm Marcus. I've been navigating these islands for about six months

now, learning the routes."

Robin shakes his hand, gratitude and wonder mixing in his voice. "You saved us,"

he says. "We would have walked right into that trap."

Henry follows, his warrior's grip firm. "We're deeply grateful," he adds,

studying Marcus with newfound respect.

Marcus's eyes scan the forest, never fully at rest. "Survival here isn't about luck,"

he says. "It's about constant awareness. One moment of carelessness can cost everything."

A hint of a smile crosses his weathered face - not quite a smile of pride,

but of hard-earned wisdom. The kind of knowledge that comes from

walking the razor's edge between capture and freedom.

"The Necrotic Lord's traps aren't just physical," Marcus continues.

"They're designed to break your spirit long before they break your body.

"I haven't made it to the Skilled Elf yet—keep running into Dark Lord

patrols—but I know where the first treehouse is."

"You'll take us there?" Henry asks.

"If you can keep quiet and follow instructions." Marcus studies

them both. "The secret paths require discipline. One mistake, one noise

at the wrong time, and we all get caught.

The Dark Lord doesn't just imprison you—he breaks you.

I've heard the screaming from the Dark Tower at night. People reliving

their failures over and over. I don't intend to end up there."

"Neither do we," Robin said firmly.

"Good. Then let's move. We need to reach the first treehouse

before dark, and there's a guard patrol route we'll need to cross."
