The Fish That Changed How I Think About Business.
Hey Friend!
Soooo... lemme tell ya about the time I sailed to another world.
A while back, I loaded up my 22-foot sailboat with my friend, his girlfriend, and my daughter — and we headed out to Emerald Bay off Catalina Island in California.
We sailed all evening. All night. Seven hours on the open water.
And when we finally arrived, the sun was just coming up over the island. Golden light hitting the water. Total silence except for the waves.
It was one of those moments where you just... stop. And breathe. And realize this is what life is supposed to feel like.
We threw on our wetsuits and fins and slipped into the water to snorkel.
And what I saw down there? I'll never forget it.
Bright orange Garibaldi fish — everywhere. Just glowing against the rocks and kelp like little underwater lanterns.
Here's something most people don't know about Garibaldi — they're actually California's official state marine fish, and they're protected by law. You can't take them. You can't keep them. They've been protected since 1953.
And get this — they're fiercely territorial. The males pick a spot on the reef, build a nest, and defend it for the rest of their lives. They'll even charge at divers who get too close!
But here's the part that really got me...
The baby Garibaldi look completely different from the adults. They're yellow-orange covered in bright blue iridescent spots — almost electric-looking. And as they grow up, those blue spots slowly fade until they're solid, bold orange.
Scientists believe those blue spots actually serve a purpose. They signal to the territorial adults: "Hey, I'm not a threat. I'm just a kid. Don't chase me."
In other words — they earn trust first before they earn their place on the reef.
I dunno about you, but that hit me.
We also swam through these massive kelp forests — towers of kelp stretching from the ocean floor all the way up to the surface, swaying back and forth like an underwater cathedral.
And gliding through the kelp? Bat rays. Just cruising by like silent ghosts, wings rippling through the water.
Now look — I know snorkeling at Catalina isn't exactly the same as diving the coral reefs in Tahiti or the Great Barrier Reef. I get that.
But something happens when you're floating in that water, surrounded by all that life. Everything is connected. Everything has a role. Everything works together.
And honestly? It reminded me of something I've seen on tropical reefs that absolutely blew my mind when I first learned about it...
The Clownfish and the Anemone.
You've probably seen clownfish in movies. But the real story is way more interesting than any cartoon.
Clownfish live inside sea anemones — those flower-like creatures with stinging tentacles that would paralyze and kill almost any other fish that touches them.
But not the clownfish.
The clownfish develops a special mucus coating on its body that protects it from the anemone's sting. And it doesn't happen overnight — the fish has to carefully, cautiously touch the tentacles over and over, slowly building up that protection.
Once it does? It has a home for life. The anemone protects the clownfish from predators, and in return, the clownfish cleans the anemone, chases away parasites, brings it food, and even improves its water circulation just by swimming around.
Both thrive because of the partnership. Neither does as well alone.
Scientists call this mutualism — a relationship where both sides benefit.
I call it a really good business model. 😄
Here's the thing...
When I was floating in that water at Emerald Bay, watching those Garibaldi defend their little patch of reef, watching everything work together in this beautiful system — I couldn't help but think about my own journey.
Because for years, I was the fish swimming around with no reef. No home. No system. No protection.
I was a kindergarten teacher for 20 years. Loved every minute of it. Then in 2012, our school lost funding, and I lost my job.
So I started looking for a way to earn income from home. And I jumped into 40 different business opportunities over the next several years. Spent over $10,000. Got a few sales here and there but nothing real.
I was like a clownfish without an anemone — exposed, vulnerable, and slowly running out of energy.
I made the mistake of thinking "If I just had the right program, everything would work."
But the program was never the problem. I didn't have the skills. And I didn't have the right partnership.
Everything changed when I found my mentor and learned the skills that actually matter — real communication with real people. Not blasting links. Not chasing strangers. Actually connecting.
And then my friends Ace and Rich told me about HBA — the Home Business Academy.
And I always tell people — if I had come across HBA years earlier, it would've helped me find success so much faster. Because it has all the missing pieces.
The tools. The training. The community. The coaching. And an income model that actually makes sense.
See, here's what most people don't realize about building income online...
Most affiliate programs pay you 20-40% commissions. That's the industry standard.
HBA pays 80%. From day one. No rank requirements. No hoops to jump through.
That's up to $128 per customer, every single month, residually.
And you only need 2 referrals to be in profit. That's not hype — that's just math.
But here's what I think makes this really work — and why it reminds me so much of those reef ecosystems...
It's a partnership. A real one.
Just like the clownfish and the anemone — both sides have to benefit or it falls apart.
HBA gives you real products people actually use to grow their businesses. That's why people stay. And when they stay, your income stays.
There's a done-for-you sales system. There's an AI that answers questions and closes sales 24/7. There are founders on live coaching calls 5 days a week — and they've been doing this for over 10 years without changing the comp plan once.
And just like those baby Garibaldi with their blue spots — you don't have to be the biggest fish on the reef to find your place. You just have to show up, be real, and share what you genuinely love with other people. That's literally all I've done.
We grew our team to over 160 paying members with over 17 leaders — and it has kept growing daily. Today we make sales every single day, and a lot of the time now, it's because of our team — not even my personal efforts anymore.
That's residual income. That's the reef working for you instead of against you.
I don't know where you are right now.
Maybe you're stuck in a 9-to-5 that's draining you. Maybe you dread Monday before Sunday's even over. Maybe you've tried things before and they didn't pan out.
I've been there. Forty times, actually. 😅
But I learned something floating in that water at Catalina, watching all those creatures thrive in their little ecosystem...
Everything in nature that thrives has two things: the right environment and the right partnerships.
You don't need to be a marketing expert. You don't need to be technical. You don't need a huge audience.
You just need to find your reef.
And if you want the deeper story behind why this model works when so many others don't, grab the free "Residual Income Shortcuts" ebook while you're there. My business partner Paul wrote it, and it'll open your eyes to why most people have online business completely backwards.
No pressure at all. Just check it out if it's intriguing to you.
P.S. — I've been married to my sweet wife Janette for 32 years. I've been a missionary to the Philippines and China. Lived in England for five years as a kid (and I can still eat like the English do 😉). I share that because I want you to know — I'm just a regular guy. A former kindergarten teacher who figured out something that actually works, and thought it was worth sharing. Kind of like spotting a beautiful Garibaldi on the reef and saying "Hey — come look at this. You gotta see this."
P.P.S. — Remember those baby Garibaldi covered in blue spots? They don't start out looking like the bold, confident adults. They grow into it — slowly, one spot fading at a time. You don't have to have it all figured out to start. You just have to get in the water. 🐠
